Karen Sharkey is a PhD candidate in the Department of Language and Literacy Education. Her doctoral study will examine discourses and practices of early literacy in public libraries. Karen is interested in public libraries as non-formal learning spaces for children and their role in early literacy initiatives in international contexts. Before beginning her doctorate, Karen worked as a Children’s Services Librarian in Vancouver and as a Program Manager developing library-based literacy projects with partners for Book Aid International. She received her BA from Simon Fraser University, her MLIS from UBC, and also holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in New Literacies from the University of Sheffield.
